Then and Now

Santa Cruz Ca. Then and now. This is my ongoing project to showcase pictures of historical value, combined with current photos of the same location. I'm dedicating this section of my site to my grandfather George Leslie Harrison. George was born in 1906 in England and came to the US when we was 21. He attended Oxford University majoring in Chemistry. Shortly after arriving in the US, he began his employment with Santa Cruz Portland Cement factory. He worked there until retirement. In May of 1987 George passed away at the age of 81. George Harrison 9/11/26
This picture was taken September 11, 1926 at the "breakfast room" George, like me was legally blind and suffered from the effects of Coats disease. George spent a lot of time behind the lens, so there aren't a whole lot of pictures avaiable of him. He developed all of his photos at the kitchen table.

The inspiration for this project all started when I found an old photo album containing George's pictures from the 1920's to the 1940's. I have to say I admire his ability to pose people. He was a quiet person, but was very capable of posing people in a very contemporary style for the time. Photography with a vison impairment at that time must have been very trying. Much of the information and dates in the following pages come from George's personal journal. I have also supplimented his notes with information from Wikipedia.

I hope you enjoy viewing these pages as much as I did making them.
